I know I’m not the only mom that feels like you constantly are asking your kids to pick up after themselves or if they’re in charge of a chore you remind them to do it all the time making their beds, feeding the dogs, pick up their toys whatever it might be. You feel like you’re going crazy and there’s not a whole lot of incentive for or motivation.
Let me show you guys what I did…
Steps to getting your kid to make their bed and other helpful activities around the house.
- Make a list of 3-5 items you know your kiddos can do and we’ll help you on a day-to-day basis. For example making their bed when they make wake up. (The chores we decided on were 1. making the bed, 2. feeding the dogs, 3. watering plants and 4. helping with setting the table or putting dishes away. You will find what works best for your family and how they can be an equal partner on day-to-day activi
ties) - Get 2-3 colors of chalk markers and draw a chart on your fridge with the three activities on the left and the days of the week on the top like any other calendar.
- Go through the chart with your kiddos and explain that each day when they complete one of these activities they get to make their own special drawing in that box. (Side note, allowing your kids to choose a color of chalk marker and drawing on the fridge and the
box for that chore on that day is more exciting than you think. My girls love the creativity and the excitement of the drawing.) - At the end of each week review the calendar with your kid and have a reward in mind for them. We decided pay the girls $0.50 to a dollar because it’s not that big of a deal to us but super exciting to them. You decide, it could be a movie day, time on the i-pad or dessert day…the options are plenty!
