IMG_20150514_074241 I’m going to get straight to the point today! Several moms have been asking me and I know it is a big question out there….Is Shakeology safe to drink for nursing moms? You see, several moms are health conscious and want to get back into shape as soon as possible but if they make the incredibly beautiful choice to nurse that darling miracle of theirs, they have to be careful with nutrition,”dieting” or losing too much weight too soon!

I was in a pretty pickle with my second daughter. I ended up having an emergency c-section and the poor dear had reflux. So, as several women know, having a c-section means 1) Longer stay in the hospital 2) Longer recovery time (8 weeks instead of 6) and 3) Extra weak core after major surgery. At first, I was beside myself, my new baby was spitting up like a zombie… I couldn’t lift my toddler who was in desperate need to be loved with the major changes in the house, and working out was looking dim…

Despite all the concerns with getting a c-section it all worked out! Something I take pride in, even though the labor wasn’t what I had planned, was that I still could nurse my little darling! We figured out the reflux so meal time wasn’t so scary. She was a little eater and couldn’t eat a bunch in one sitting, so we did IMAG2655smaller nursing times more often. I was very protective of that time with her, especially since she was so tiny (she was almost 3 weeks early). Nursing went well with my first daughter until I went back to work. Work was so busy and stressful along side the emotional piece of not being with my daughter that I saw my milk supply take a dip. I tried all sorts of funny teas, beers, supplements to keep my milk going. It worked for the most part, but it wasn’t the same as before I went back to work. This was in the back of my head as time approached for me to go back to work with my second. I found myself a little hesitant jumping back into the workout wagon, stressing about my milk supply….

A month went by with a toddler and a baby. Strange as it might sound there was little time all of a sudden for prepping healthy meals and oddly enough the energy and ganas to cook had mysteriously hidden in one of the diaper bins. We found ourselves finding quick fixes, aka microwave meals or ordering take out…I remember eating “NuttyBars” and several other cookies that I normally didn’t eat as if they were never going to be produced again. It was getting out of control and I was not a fan. It’s hard though, when you’re in it and your’re tired…what do you do?

One of my best friends had been a Coach with Beachbody for several months by this point and she knew that I loved working out and being in great physical shape! We talked about the program and she also knew how concerned I was with “protecting” my milk supply! I was assured that it was safe but to check it out anyways. She sent me the Shakeology ingredients along with a few videos about the nutritional value.

I liked what I read and saw but I wanted to be sure, so I took the ingredients to my pediatrician. I asked her if there was anything in there that would cause harm to my baby and that would affect my milk supply. We went through the list together. She didn’t see anything off hand but wanted to look into it further, just in case! At my follow up appointment my pediatrician told me every looked fine! Shakeology is Pediatrician approved! She said that realistically I would be getting more vitamins and nutrients from the shake  than trying to buy all the crazy fruits and vegetables we needed to plan meals for those nutrients! She did talk to me about the calories needed and that it should be used as a snack, not a meal replacement! Getting the right nutrition is a big deal! We need so  many nutrients and fuel to function properly…especially when your body is providing for two!

I constantly reach out to the experts to verify that I am still making the best choices for myself and my family. I am true believer in family chiropractic work and discuss health issues, daily workouts and regimen with our chiropractor! At one point I remember going to kitchen out of habit looking for a snack and as I opened the door to fridge I thought to myself “Eh, I think I just need some water”…and I got a drink of water instead. It was a pinnacle moment for me! I knew my life would include Shakeology from that point forward. The best part is my milk was fine! I was dropping my baby weight and maintaining my milk supply! My little angel was growing strong, hitting all of her milestones and sleeping great through the night! My pediatrician was pleased with my choice!

The other piece that I love is that my whole family loves it! My 3 year old asks for her own shake because she doesn’t want to share, my 16 month old demands “moh” drink after drink (drinking almost a third of the shake) and we had order another bag for my husband. Today we sit around the table and have shake parties! Lol!

All of a sudden I was more regular…yes, this is a big deal especially after major surgery…a big deal! As expected it did take longer to recover from the c-section. I was back into my workouts full speed but my core wouldn’t let me participate in programs such as pilates like I used to and planks were a sad, sad tell. I stayed the course and allowed myself time to heal! Today I can rock a plank for 3 minutes and look and feel amazing. Thankfully I made the choice to incorporate Shakeology into my diet because here I am 16 months later in better shape than before my wedding!

So from my personal experience with Shakeology and all the research I did, my pediatrician did…Yes, Shakeology is safe for nursing mamas, and children and husbands!! I personally lost 20 pounds while nursing my baby and using Shakeology. It is possible to lose weight and keep your milk if you eat enough of the right kinds of foods to fuel your body.
